Job Description

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

The Role

An Analytical Battery Chemist is responsible for conducting hands on chemical analysis of materials and unknowns using analytical chemistry methods and instrumentation. This includes performing chemical analysis procedures according to standard test methods and developing new methods to support engineering and manufacturing activities. The chemist will be involved in problem-solving and providing new and improved analytical methods for measuring and identifying chemicals. They will also provide test direction and resolve complex often urgent technical issues associated with vehicle Manufacturing and Engineering.

The role will primarily focus on supporting battery manufacturing, battery systems, and electrification projects, including sample preparation and operating analytical equipment. This includes performing quality control & routine chemical analysis along with new method development as required. The chemist will utilize their creativity, experimental skills, and analytical abilities to carry out project assignments and document results in detail.

What You'll Do
  • Performing hands-on analysis of automotive and battery materials and components using both standard and customized test methods.
  • Preparing samples, maintaining testing instruments, and ensuring their functional readiness through preventive maintenance and diagnostics.
  • Writing comprehensive reports detailing the results of the analysis.
  • Establishing timelines, targets, and course of action for projects/assignments to meet the expectations of internal and external customers.
  • Adapting well to ambiguity and effectively managing change.
  • Consulting with technical teams as an expert in chemical measurement.
  • Applying problem-solving skills to analyze, diagnose, and recommend/implement changes based on analytical lab test data.
  • Keeping up-to-date with new product and test technology advancements.
  • Maintaining adherence to GM safety practices


Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering.
  • Understanding of chemical properties, chemicals, and interactions with automotive component hardware.
  • Familiarity with sampling and analysis techniques to characterize materials.
  • 2+ years experience with chemical, electrochemical, and/ or battery/battery cell standard test methods.
  • Knowledge of various battery analysis techniques, such as battery teardowns, lithium plating mapping, porosity analysis, electrode material characterization, coin cell building and testing, etc.
  • Familiarity with ASTM chemical analysis standards.
  • Project management experience, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Occasional travel required between Chemistry Labs in Milford and Warren.
  • Ability to work with export-controlled technology.


What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
  • Master of Science degree
  • Experience with Ion Chromatography, Gas Chromatography and/or, Mass Spectrometry Instrumentation.
  • Experience with analytical instruments and equipment such as Brunauer-Emmett-Teller Analyzer (BET), Rheometers, Particle Size Analyzers, etc.
  • DFSS Black Belt
