Job Purpose:

The Chief Strategy Officer (CSO)plays a strategic role in partnership with the CEO and the Executive Team in the formulation and management of Corporate Strategy including developing, evolving or engaging the corporate vision and strategy, overseeing strategic planning and leading strategic initiatives, monitoring and integrating key trends and insights and partnering to formulate strategic roadmap for the enterprise. The CSO leads the management effort to engage, as appropriate, the Corporate Board of Directors in our Strategy and related plans.

The Corporate Strategy team creates and drives strategic directives and working across the organization, translates them into operational and actionable objectives to achieve short-term and long-term goals, in close partnership with the Corporate Performance Office. The Strategy Office provides business strategic insight into the annual and on-going planning efforts in support of the corporate process. This position leads a team of Strategy Directors who support the business segments and the Corporate Insights team that provides consumer insights and market research to all areas within the enterprise.

The Chief Strategy Officer reports to the Chief Human Resources Officer.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of and execution of a comprehensive strategic plan and growth strategy by collaborating with CEO, the Executive Team and Board of Directors.
  • Lead enterprise strategy sessions with CEO and Executive Team to develop and implement the vision and strategic direction for TruStage and translate into strategic priorities, imperatives, and operational and actionable objectives to achieve both short-term and long-term goals.
  • Create, analyze, and track key performance metrics to drive enterprise strategic and financial objectives.
  • Lead the Quarterly Strategy Review with the Executive Team.
  • Work collaboratively across the enterprise to align enterprise strategic plans to accomplish corporate objectives and identify opportunities and commitments to work with other systems and processes, in alignment with the business segments and shared service areas.
  • Lead the strategy refreshes for the enterprise and business segments and key functional areas of the company.
  • Lead the planning and prioritization of the initiatives to drive enterprise priorities and imperatives.
  • Lead the process to identify and prioritize major change initiatives (projects) to accomplish our enterprise strategic goals.
  • Ensure departmental/business segment strategic planning projects reflect organizational strategic priorities.
  • Develop measurements to track progress against our strategic goals, Business Segments, imperatives all laddering up to drive enterprise imperatives.
  • Collaborating with CFO/Corporate Treasurer to develop a capital plan in line with the strategy.
  • Analyze market dynamics, market share changes, product line performance, and competitive intelligence.
  • Partner with enterprise leaders, CPO, special committees, and consultants to support execution of key initiatives.
  • Lead the process to identify, prioritize, and pursue funding for major change initiatives necessary to achieve strategy and planned results.
  • Strategically partner and collaborate with Business Development and TruStage Ventures in identifying business needs and strategies and how those might be accomplished through external partnerships or acquisitions.
  • Coordinate enterprise external engagements and spend on matters of strategic importance.
  • Impact customer volume and retention through oversight of competitive and market intelligence by delivering business segments with high-value analysis and intelligence on our competitors, industry and market environment.
  • Responsible to lead a team, developing and coaching talent and building a diverse and inclusive community.


Job Requirements:
  • MBA or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • 15+ years of directly related experience in financial services/insurance industry, preference to a B2B2C business.
  • 3+ years in a CSO role within a division or business line, or 5+ years engaging in enterprise strategy development, planning and execution.
  • Proven experience in corporate strategy formulation and execution of strategic priorities.
  • Strong business knowledge and understanding of P&L, operations and processes, and applicable experience with the integration intersections and handoffs between all components.
  • Proven ability to influence CEO and senior executives and ability to creatively develop and provide problem-solving expertise to achieve maximum results.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize strategic initiatives to drive business results.
  • Proven ability to build and nurture strong relationships across the enterprise with business leaders, strategy, product, analytics, partner distribution, data, finance, and other matrixed teams.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating, coaching, and developing high potential individuals and teams in a cross-functional and matrix environment.
  • Proven success in collaborating and influencing others in a rapidly changing environment; demonstrated ability to lead others through change.
  • Demonstrated initiative and drive including ability to drive organizational strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve positive results and build solid business relationships at all levels in the organization through persuasion, influence, negotiation, conflict resolution, and change management strategies.
  • Strong communication ability with senior leaders, internal and external business partners, consultants, and customers.
  • Cross-functional decision-making: Solicits and objectively considers input from appropriate sources; Considers implications of actions on other areas, people, and processes when deciding; strong record of data-based decision-making.
  • Hands-on experience and proven track record managing all aspects of transformational initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess situations, define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage ambiguity and chart an execution path for teams to drive tangible results aligned to organizational strategy.
  • Strong communicator who can collaborate across departments to build aligned views of future needs and solution direction in a professional manner; Able to translate strategy and direction into a compelling story and messages.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in banking, finance, or insurance industry is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading teams across different locations, including remote or virtual teams.
