Job Description

The Environmental Manager is a key part of the plant leadership team responsible for all environmental permitting, operations, and compliance on a 24/7 basis at Bonnell Aluminum's Newnan, GA plant. Develops and improves the plant's environmental management system to meet ISO14001 standards. Supervises a 24/7 wastewater treatment plant. Serves as alternate plant Safety Manager. Reports to Division EHS Director and supports Divisional environmental programs.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
  • Establishes, maintains, and audits environmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensures accurate and timely recordkeeping, monitoring, and report generation according to the Plant's permits and applicable regulations to prevent fines, criminal enforcement, and civil suits.
  • Maintain a system to respond to regulatory agency inspections, including interacting with inspectors and responding to regulatory agency communications.
  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the plant's environmental management system (ISO: 14001) to comply with or exceed the requirements of environmental laws, regulations, policies, and guidance documents.
  • Conducts necessary employee training to maintain environmental compliance while promoting sustainability awareness.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Keeps records and completes reporting for the Newnan Plant's Title V Air Permit, RCRA Part B Permit, Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment Permit, and general storm water permit.
  • Completes required environmental reporting including EPA reports (Tier II, Toxics Release Inventory, TSCA), and permit required reports ahead of deadlines.
  • Manages the Newnan Plant's waste streams including hazardous waste generation and disposal to comply with regulatory requirements; universal, special, and solid wastes to dispose and recycle in accordance with State and Federal standards; and recycling and reuse systems necessary for plant compliance or operations.
  • Oversees the treatment and discharge of plant wastewater in compliance with wastewater discharge permit, including the supervision of 6-10 Direct Reports.
  • Provides Environmental Compliance direction to 25-35 salaried employees and 250-500 hourly employees.
  • Communicates with management, department heads, and other employees concerning environmental issues.
  • Develops strategic relationships with regulatory agencies, attorneys, and consultants.
  • Reviews new materials for the Newnan Plant and maintains the Safety Data Sheet Management system.
  • Conducts annual chemical inventory of the facility.
  • Reports on key metrics, challenges, and opportunities to Plant Manager and Division EHS Director.
  • Supports Division EHS Director in strategic environmental objectives and implementation of environmental policies and procedures.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor of Science in an engineering or environmental-related field is required.
    • Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering or chemistry is preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years in an environmental-related field is preferred.
  • Previous environmental management experience of large waste generator, industrial wastewater treatment facility, and/or Title V permitted facility preferred.
  • Federal and State environmental regulatory experience required. Previous experience with EPD of Georgia preferred.
  • OSHA HAZWOPER, RCRA/DOT, or other certification preferred.
  • Understanding of mechanical/chemical engineering of water systems is required. Previous operation and/or management of wastewater treatment or remediation systems preferred.
  • Previous handling of compliance inspections/audits, answering findings/inquiries, negotiating findings, and reporting to maintain compliance to permits is required.

  • Represents Bonnell Aluminum to external stakeholders to best promote good faith in the community and with regulatory agencies.
  • Effectively uses technical writing skills to correspond with regulatory agencies, inspectors, and environmental consultants.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, and other necessary computer programs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervision of 6-10 Direct Reports consisting of wastewater treatment operators. Develop direct reports through performance management, coaching, and stretch assignments. Ensure operator licenses are maintained and apportion renewal training.
  • Provides Environmental Compliance direction to 25-35 salaried employees and 250-500 hourly employees.
  • Conducts environmental training for all employees in accordance with permits and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicates with management, department heads, and other employees concerning environmental issues.
  • Performs environmental audits of the facility and provides effective feedback and guidance to leadership and employees to drive improvement.
  • Inspires employees to embrace Bonnell's Core Values and Bonnell's environmental policies and procedures.
