Job Summary

The Manager of Data Science is a leadership role, reporting directly to the Director of Data Science, is responsible and accountable for leading a team that:

  • Design and develop data products that address internal and external business needs using analytic tools/languages such as R, python, and SAS, BI tools such as Power BI/Tableau
  • Partner with internal customers to develop analyses that lead to actionable insights that improve business decision making, performance, and customer experience
  • Define and work with stakeholders to improve data integrity and usefulness throughout the company, including identification of opportunities to improve operations and processes that impact data
  • Foster cross functional/regional sharing of analytical frameworks, approaches, and insights
  • Is focused on delivering actionable analytical solutions, and enhanced process capabilities that drive and sustainable and optimized performance


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Data Science Ownership Responsibilities:

  • Manage the team's (3-5 individuals) workflow, prioritize solutions based on effort versus Value & Risk and allocate tasks and projects between the team members based on domain expertise
  • Build a team of talented data scientists that can navigate a fast-paced environment with the potential for frequent course changes


  • Identify, analyze, and leverage industry best practices, benchmark studies and business relationships with other utilities to measure and improve business processes
  • Drive business value through successful delivery of analytics products and analysis associated with strategic business value initiatives
  • In tandem with the Director of Data Science, lead the maturation process for data science at NiSource


Leader, Partner & Trusted Advisor Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and develop an elite analytics team of data scientists and analytical professionals


  • Lead an enterprise community of practice for analytics to foster cross-function collaboration
  • Partner with data governance team to help identify data integrity opportunities
  • Partner and align with IT strategies that support an efficient, secure, cost-effective use of technology
  • Instills the importance of a value-first mentality
  • Strategic partner to help drive culture change about data & analytics consumption


Required Qualifications for Position

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
  • 7+ years total experience:


  • 5+ years of business intelligence, performance measurement and analysis, process improvement or similar experience


  • Strong skills in data mining, cleaning, shaping, sizing using SQL, Python, R or similar
  • Strong skills with data visualization engines like Power BI or Tableau and the ability to effectively communicate stories with the data
  • Serve as an inclusive leader by proactively seeking out different perspectives both internally and externally
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment with tight timelines


  • Experience developing and managing large data warehouses
  • Excellent oral, written and listening communication skills as well as skills in facilitation
  • Ability to develop and communicate management / senior level reporting
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and at times competing deliverables


Preferred Qualifications for Position

  • Advanced degree in data science, math, MBA, or other related preferred
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams
  • Experience consolidating data warehouses and working with cloud systems


  • Proven track record of leading a team of data scientists to create enterprise value
  • Electric/Gas utility experience knowledge

Salary Range:
$125,800.00 - $188,600.00
